LSU’s new head football coach Brian Kelly has heard a lot of noise in his career and like many college football coachHas suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Nick Saban.

And now, Kelly is excited to have the chance to turn a new leaf in a new state and at a new convention. He recently sat down with the Varsity House podcast and admitted refreshingly honest about his motivation and goals for his career at LSU.

“That was the challenge,” Kelly said. “It was the ultimate challenge to come down here after living in the Midwest my entire career, where most people said, ‘Well, you can’t do that. You can’t go there and victory in the SECYou’re not from there.’”

By the way, this might be the greatest YouTube video I’ve ever seen.

Anyway, as might be expected, Kelly also referred to Saban by name.

“I want to beat Nick Saban. Who doesn’t want to beat Nick Saban? You know what I mean?” Kelly admitted. “I want to play him in the regular season. That is the standard. Now, he’s an anti-convention.”

I hate to state the obvious, but playing him later in the season didn’t go so well for Kelly, who lost 42-14 in the BCS national championship game a decade earlier while at Notre Dame and 31-14 in College football playoff semifinals back in January.

But perhaps a regular season game with fewer stakes and less pressure will yield better results for Kelly, who has bigger ambitions than just taking down the Tide.

Kelly says that “the alignment of the athletic director and president” at LSU provides “all the resources needed to win a national championship.”

Although I suspect Notre Dame couldn’t provide those resources, I can’t blame Kelly for taking a fresh approach to the shot at national championships. He is 60 years old and he probably won’t have a better chance than this.
