Following the recent demand by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also called for the removal of GST on medical and life insurance. While Gadkari had previously addressed the issue through a letter to the Finance Minister, Banerjee has escalated the matter by threatening to initiate a protest if the GST on these essential services is not removed. Currently, a GST rate of 18% is applied to the premiums of life and health insurance policies, a significant burden on policyholders. Gadkari’s earlier letter highlighted the issue, emphasizing the financial strain it imposes on individuals seeking medical and life insurance coverage. Banerjee’s demand comes as a significant push for change, as she asserts that the tax is detrimental to the public’s access to critical insurance services. Her stance signals a more aggressive approach to the issue, potentially leading to widespread demonstrations if the government does not act to address the GST imposition on insurance premiums.
