HUBBALLI: A day before the BJP‘s state working committee meeting in Hubballi, Congress activists drew public attention to the state government’s failure and negligence in providing basic facilities for the public, by performing ‘Gana homa’ in the middle of a major commercial road in the city.
Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Shobha Karandlaje, BJP national president JP Nadda, and national general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Arun Singh will attend the meeting in Hubballi on December 28 and 29. Before their arrival in the city, Congress workers chose to demonstrate in an unusual manner, demanding dust-free and pothole-free roads. They performed Gana homa on Koppikar road, a major commercial road in need of repair due to pond-like potholes and dust.
According to Hindu customs, Chandrasekhar Hiremath of Veerabhadreshwar Temple in Bammapur Oni and Satish Itagimath of Ganapati Temple in Hemaraddi Colony chanted slokas to perform the homa. Hiremath said that Lord Ganapati is highly revered and is the remover of all difficulties. Invoking Lord Ganapati is the first step in any new venture.
Practically all roads in Hubballi are in bad shape, and the BJP-led government is slumbering and ignoring development projects, said Rajat Ullagaddimath, president of the Vidyanagar Block Congress. “We have been protesting for good roads for the past year by drawing Rangoli near potholes, leaving paper ships in water-filled craters, and in other ways, but the authorities have not initiated any efforts to improve the road condition. Now,because the BJP’s state working committee meeting is being held in Hubballi, pothole filling and sweeping work is being prioritised,” he added.
Altaf Hallur, president of the Hubballi-Dharwad Mahanagara Jilla Congress, stated that roads in Hubballi were repaired during the wedding of Union minister Pralhad Joshi‘s daughter, and that toads are currently being repaired ahead of BJP meeting.
“I pray to God that there should be a marriage of a son or daughter of BJP leaders every month, as well as a working committee meeting, so that the road can be restored and people may have dust-free roads,” he added.
