The BJP has become the first party since 1990 to touch the 100 mark in the Rajya Sabha. In the elections held on Thursday, the BJP has won one seat each in Assam, Tripura and Nagaland. After this BJP has reached the achievement of having 100 members in Rajya Sabha for the first time.

Recently, biennial elections were held for 13 Rajya Sabha seats in six states. This includes 2 seats in Assam, 1 in Himachal Pradesh, 3 in Kerala, 1 in Nagaland, 1 in Tripura and 5 in Punjab. The BJP lost one seat from Punjab, but won three North East states and one seat each from Himachal Pradesh.

AAP wins all five seats in Punjab
AAP candidates won the five Rajya Sabha seats in Punjab unopposed. These include Raghav Chadha, MLA from Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar, cricketers Harbhajan Singh, Sandeep Pathak, Sanjeev Arora, and Ashok Mittal.

Official announcement yet to be made
The Rajya Sabha website has not yet released the notification of the new tally. At present the number of BJP members is 97. In the recently held elections, it has won three seats. After this, the number of BJP members in the Rajya Sabha will reach 100.

BJP seats 55 in Rajya Sabha in 2014
There are a total of 245 members in the Rajya Sabha and the majority figure is 123. BJP is slowly moving towards majority. The BJP had 55 seats in the Rajya Sabha in 2014 and has been steadily increasing since then, as the party has won power in several states.

Congress dominated in the Rajya Sabha in 1990
The last time a party had 100 or more seats in the Upper House was in 1990, when the Congress had 108 members. Then after the biennial elections, the number dropped to 99 and the number of Congress members continues to decline.

BJP’s hold may be weak
However, the BJP’s hold in the Rajya Sabha may be weakening, as polling will be held in several states for about 52 more seats soon. Reversals are expected in states like Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Jharkhand.
