Bihar Holiday Calendar 2024: No Holiday On Rakshabandhan, Janmashtami, Ram Navami And Shivratri

The Bihar Government’s Education Department has released the holiday calendar for the academic year 2024. From this year, summer vacations are only for students and not for teachers. Parents-teacher meetings, special classes and exams will be conducted during summer vacations. As per a press release from the Bihar Education Department, the holiday calendar 2024 has been structured to meet the mandated criteria of 220 teaching days under the Right To Education Act (RTE). The updated calendar extends summer vacations from 20 to 30 days. Notably, holidays for Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha (Bakrid) have been lengthened to three days each, leading to the cancellation of Hindu holidays such as Hartalika Teej and Jitiya. Several significant Hindu festivals like Makar Sankranti, Rakshabandhan, Saraswati Puja, Janmashtami, Ram Navami, Bhaidooj, and Shivratri have been excluded from the holiday calendar.

The calendar accounts for four Hindu festivals—Diwali (1), Durga Puja (3), Chhath Puja (3), and Holi (2), summing up to nine days of holidays. In contrast, the calendar includes six Muslim festivals—shab-e-barat (1), Eid-ul-Fitr (3), Eid-ul-Zoha (3), Muharram (2), Chehallum (1), and Prophet Mohammad’s birthday (1), totaling 11 days allocated for Islamic festivals.
