Why will chip passports be issued?
The decision has been taken to prevent counterfeiting of passports and to ease the process of immigration of passengers. In this matter, the Ministry of External Affairs has said in Parliament that there are plans to issue chip-enabled e-passports with advanced security features to citizens.

Will this stop tampering?
Yes, till now passports are issued to citizens on printed booklets which would have been easy to copy. But after the arrival of passports equipped with new technology, it will be difficult to cheat.

How to protect the holder from e-passport fraud?
The specialty of a chip-based passport is that the personal information of the applicants will be digitally signed and stored in the chip. This will be included in the passport booklet. If a person tampers with the chip, the system will detect it and this will result in failure of passport verification.

Has the e-passport trial been done?
According to reports, the government has completed the trial of issuing 20,000 e-passports.

In which centers will you get this passport?
So far the government has not disclosed this. According to reports, 10 thousand to 20 thousand passport issuance units will be installed per hour in Delhi and Chennai. After that e-passports can be issued at 36 passport centers. In this regard, the government’s National Informatics Center is working with the Ministry of External Affairs on the project.

Who is making this smart passport?
The Central Government has given approval to India Security Press-ISP Nashik for procurement of electronic contactless inlays for passports. E-passport can be started as soon as the tender and purchase process is completed by Nashik. The Ministry of External Affairs can announce its process soon.
