Amid the ongoing protest against the Karnataka government’s decision to release 5,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from dams in the state, the Farmer Group and opposition parties have called for a statewide bandh in Bengaluru city today, September 26. Till now, the Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) has lent moral support to the bandh. They said that they would take a call on declaring a holiday for schools.
The president of the Sugarcane Growers Federation, Kuruburu Shanthkumar, also called for a bandh and sought support and cooperation from schools, colleges, and other private entities to support the bandh and statewide shutdown.
Besides, Bengaluru Urban District Deputy Commissioner Dayananda K A has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the city. Several private schools and colleges have also declared a holiday for students.
This protest aims to draw the attention of the government to the grievances of Karnataka and its farmers, expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s decision. It is expected that over 50,000 individuals from different walks of life, including traders, workers, students, and activists, will take part in the protest.
Adding to the protest against the government’s decision to transfer Cauvery River water to Tamil Nadu, pro-Kannada organisations have also announced another bandh in Karnataka on Friday, September 29, after the ‘Bengaluru Bandh’ set on September 26.
As per reports, efforts are being made to ensure that hospitals, nursing homes, medical shops, and emergency services continue to operate to ensure public safety. Moreover, government offices and Namma Metro Services will also remain functional on Tuesday, September 26, during the state-wide bandh.
However, shops, markets, educational institutions, and public transportation services, including buses and taxis, are also likely to cause inconvenience to commuters as they might remain shut.
In addition to that, it is to be informed that there is no official announcement regarding the state-wide bandh as of now. It is advised that students and parents remain in touch with their respective school administrators and teachers for any updates regarding the closure of schools.
