An on-duty Assam police officer allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself using his service revolver on Saturday. Officials familiar with the matter confirm that the incident happened after the cop fired upon a woman in Dibrugarh district.

The incident took place in Assam’s Lahowal area around 2 am, reported Hindustan Times, adding that the deceased cop, Anupam Gowala was a resident of Jorhat district and was the officer-in-charge of Namrup police station.

The woman identified as Bishnupriya Lahon Gogoi is admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment, said Bipul Gogoi, husband of the victim. Bipul is also an eyewitness in the matter, who informed the officials that Gowala forcibly entered their house and asked his wife to accompany him.

Bipul further informed the cops that Gowala threatened him with his gun when he tried to intervene between the two, leading to a scuffle. The accused then allegedly opened fire at his wife, causing her severe injuries, reported the English daily.

Bipul said that the cop then shot himself. Gogoi immediately called up the police who arrived and recovered the dead cop’s body. The body is sent for post-mortem, said police.
