assam: Assam: Congress suspends MLA who backed BJP for ‘sake of development’ | Guwahati News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: The Congress has suspended MLA Sashikanta Das, who had stirred a controversy by touching the feet of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita.
Das, a legislator from Money in central Assam, had said in his reply to the party’s showcause notice that he will support the BJP-led government from within the Congress to usher in development in his constituency.
Assam PCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah told TOI on Saturday that “traitor” MLAs won’t decide the fate of the Congress in upcoming elections. “A party is strengthened by its dedicated workers, not MLAs with vested interests who weaken the stand of their own party against our rival BJP,” said Borah.
He said Das’s reply was unacceptable as the legislator was “in favour of supporting BJP from within the Congress”. Borah said the Congress has received another video footage of a meeting where Das was talking like a BJP leader.
“After he (Das) touched the feet of the state BJP president, it was a big insult to the ideology of the Congress and embarrassing for us. We were not satisfied with his reply to the showcause notice in this regard. He did not appear for the Congress legislature party meeting held a few days ago, where he was summoned,” Borah said.
