Apple has collaborated with LG Display to integrate new OLED material sets.
LG’s OLED material set will be used in the upcoming 11- and 13-inch iPad Pro models.
The Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is reportedly working to bring OLED displays for the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro models in 2026/27. Now, a new report suggests the the future iPad Pro and MacBook models equipped with OLED panels will adopt new, specialised display materials.
According to The Elec, the iPhone maker has collaborated with LG Display to integrate new OLED material sets in some of its future devices, including forthcoming iPad Pro and MacBook models, MacRumors reported.
LG’s OLED material set will be used in the upcoming 11- and 13-inch iPad Pro models, while a next-generation MacBook, slated to launch in 2027, will adopt LG’s subsequent OLED material set, as per the report.
It also mentioned that the OLED panels designed for upcoming iPad Pro and MacBook models features a two-stack tandem structure, which consists of two light-emitting layers stacked together.
The two-stack OLED design can generate the same brightness levels as its single-stack counterparts, but with significantly reduced power consumption and extended lifespan. The iPhone currently uses a single stack OLED display with one light-emitting layer, MacRumors said.
In related news, Ross Young, CEO of research firm Display Supply Chain Consultant, recently revealed that Apple’s first MacBook Pro models with OLED displays are still at least three years away from launching.
He said that it will take a few years for Apple’s supply chain partners to build out manufacturing lines for mass production of laptop-sized OLED panels.
This is the main reason why Young is not expecting MacBook Pro models with OLED displays to launch until 2026 or 2027. He also shared this timeframe previously too.
According to MacRumors, Young has been a dependable source of display-related information for future Apple products for several years, with a highly-accurate track record.
Compared to current MacBook Pro models with LCD screens, benefits of OLED technology would include increased brightness, higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, improved power efficiency for longer battery life, and more.
