Apple faces more pressure in Europe about one of its products

Apple claims it uses recycled materials to make the Apple Watch models but the European body is no sure if that’s true.

Apple and the European Union have been at the loggerheads in the past few years, which has even forced the company to make drastic changes. Now, the European body is coming after Apple over its claims to be a carbon neutral brand, especially with its Apple Watch models.

Apple even talks about the carbon neutral efforts that have been done to make the new Apple Watch Series 9 and the Watch Ultra 2. The details of its strategy were even presented as a mock interview with an actress disguised as Mother Nature during the iPhone 15 launch event in September. But the company might have to let go of this tag while marketing these products in the region.

As highlighted in a report by the Financial Times, the European Consumer Organisation has been quoted saying that it will now allow companies like Apple to make carbon neutral claims that are based on carbon credits. The agency believes that consumers cannot be deceived using terms like carbon neutral as it feels they are scientifically inaccurate.

Apple is probably one of the more proactive companies out there that continues to touch upon its efforts to minimise carbon dioxide but the European body is clearly having none of it. Apple even claims that it uses recycled materials to make its devices, which might be true to some extent. In fact, the company felt the need to ditch the charger in the iPhone packaging, which has reduced the size of the box.

Having said that, most people aren’t sure if that was the right call, as people would still need to buy chargers separately, which means more money goes into Apple’s coffers. Both the parties are clearly not seeing eye-to-eye on multiple aspects.

Apple was forced to use the USB C port on iPhones after the EU passed a new bill to standardise mobile charging ports. Similarly, the company faces pressure to allow sideloading of apps on iOS which will go far away from the ideology that Apple has prescribed for decades.
