Shahrukh Hussain, a 17-year-old resident of Ankita Singh’s colony of Dumka in Jharkhand, took his life. While sitting in the house, Shahrukh threw petrol from the window and threw it into the fire. Five days later, he died during treatment at RIMS, Ranchi. Ankita wanted to become an IPS officer. There is outrage in Dumka after Ankita’s death.
Dumka, where Ankita lived in Jaruadih locality, has a mixed population of Hindus and Muslims. Her father Sanjeev Singh is a salesman in Biscuit Company. Mother died a year ago. She lived in the house with her father, grandfather and 12 year old younger brother. The elder sister is married.
Father Sanjeev Singh wiping tears says – Ankita, the middle of three siblings, was very good at studies. She studied in class 12th in Dumka’s Government Girls High School.
Ankita was suffering from such a pain for the last 2 years, which she could not share with everyone. The name of this trouble was Shahrukh Hussain (22). Shahrukh’s image was that of a stray boy in the locality. Whose job was to woo the girls and entangle them in their clutches. He often harassed the girls of the locality.
Forgiveness later became a punishment
Sanjeev said- Daughter Ankita was upset with Shahrukh’s antics for the last two years. When we wanted to take the help of the police in this matter, Shahrukh’s elder brother came and apologized. He also assured that now his brother will never trouble him. Everything went well for a few days, but then Shahrukh did not give up his habit.
He again started harassing Ankita. He used to threaten everyday for 10-15 days. On 22 August, he made threats over the phone. After a day he did as he had said.
…and told everything before death
Before death, Ankita gave a statement in front of Executive Magistrate Chandrajit Singh and SDPO Noor Mustafa. She said- I was sleeping in my room around five o’clock in the morning of 23 August. Suddenly I got scared seeing the flames near the window of the room. I saw Shahrukh Hussain, a stray boy from the locality, running towards my house with a can of petrol in his hand. By then the fire had started in my body as well and I was feeling very burning.

Follows while going to school and tuition
Ankita said in her statement before death that whenever I went for school or tuition, he would follow me. Although I never took his antics seriously, but he had juggled my mobile number from somewhere. After that, calling me often and pressurizing me to be friends with me. I made it clear to him that I had nothing to do with this.
threatened to kill the family
According to Ankita, Shahrukh had also threatened that if I did not listen to him, he would kill me and my family members. I had anticipated his actions, but could not understand that this would happen to me. On the night of 22 August, he threatened me that he would kill me if I did not listen to him. When I told this to my father, he said that the matter would be resolved after morning, but before any solution could be found, on the morning of August 23, Shahrukh spritzed me with petrol and burnt me.
Laughing in police custody… the accused does not regret
The accused was seen laughing in police custody. He has no remorse for what he did. When the police was arresting the accused, he was seen laughing. Even from his body language, it did not seem that he had any kind of regret. Shahrukh was arrested by the police on 23 August itself. At the same time, the police has also arrested his partner Chhotu Khan, who gave petrol on Monday.
Daughter has died in agony, Shahrukh gets hanged
Ankita’s father Sanjeev also said that his daughter’s killer should be given capital punishment. He said that the way his daughter died in agony, the murderer should be hanged in return for it.
