NASHIK: All 65 students from NashikAhmednagar and Jalgaon districts, who were stranded in Ukraine and had sought assistance when the Ukraine-Russia war broke out, have now returned to India, though 10 are yet to reach their homes.
Some of them are about to catch trains or flights from New Delhi to reach Mumbai or Nashik. Others have reached their homes, said the respective district authorities.
Nashik city’s Aditi Deshmukh and Prateek Jondhale, along with hundreds of students were stuck in Kharkiv – a city that witnessed fierce shelling by the Russian forces. The students in Kharkiv were among the last from the Nashik division to be extracted. Deshmukh started her return journey on March 2, and reached Nashik on Sunday. Jondhale started on March 4 and reached Delhi on Monday morning.
“We have been waiting for a long time for our son’s return,” said Pramod Jondhale, Prateek’s father.
Of the 65 students, 27 are from Ahmednagar and 19 each from Jalgaon and Nashik districts. The maximum number of students were studying at the Zhaporizhizhia State Medical University, while the others were in universities like the Bukovinian State Medical University, the Kyiv Medical University, the Kharkiv National Medical University, the Odessa National Medical University, the Lviv National Medical University and the Vinnytsya National Medical University.
“The relatives of all the students were contacted by the administration. The state government was also kept informed about the students’ situation,” said Jalgaon resident deputy collector Rahul Patil.
In the Ahmednagar district, 21 of the 27 students have reached their homes, while six are in transit. In Nashik, 15 of the 19 students are home. One of them has even returned with his dog. Four other students are on trains or flights.
The Nashik district disaster management chairperson, who is also the Nashik collector, had asked the senior officers to get in touch with the students.
