Police said questioning the detained women revealed that they had committed similar offences in a shop in the JP Nagar area and another in Jayanagar

An alert shop owner in Bengaluru dialled the nearest police station and helped police officials arrest four members of a ‘saree chor’ gang. Police also recovered 38 silk sarees worth about Rs 17.5 lakh.

However, two members of the gang managed to flee and police launched a manhunt to nab them.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda said, “The staff of JP Nagar Police Station have arrested 4 women and recovered 38 silk sarees worth about Rs 17.5 lakhs. These 4 ladies along with the two others had gone to a silk shop in JP Nagar limits and tried to divert the attention of the workers at the shop.”

“They tried to take out about 18 sarees with them. Suspecting their movement, the staff of the shop immediately stopped them and questioned them. After verification, it was found that they were trying to steal these 18 silk sarees,” he added.

He said questioning the detained women revealed that they had committed similar offences in a shop in the JP Nagar area and another in Jayanagar.

“They stole about 38 sarees like this. All these sarees have been recovered. The total value of these sarees is about Rs 17.5 lakhs. Four accused women have been arrested in this case and we are trying to catch two others soon,” he said.
