SAD President Sukhbir Badal.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) core committee meeting will be held in Chandigarh today. It will be presided over by Pramukh Sukhbir Badal. There may be a churn on the Iqbal Jhunda report. The demand for implementation of this report was made by MLA Manpreet Ayali. He boycotted the presidential election citing this.

He did not vote for BJP-backed NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu despite Akali Dal’s behest. Ayali said that the party gave unconditional support. No issue like release of captive Sikhs belonging to Punjab, right over Chandigarh was put before them.

Demand for change of leadership in the party
The demand for change of leadership in Akali Dal is gaining momentum. Many party leaders are not happy with the leadership of Sukhbir Badal. Their demand is that the command of the party should be handed over to another leader. Though there were discussions about Sukhbir’s offer to resign after the defeat in the last Vis election, the party termed it as a rumour.

10 years government ran for 10 years, a crushing defeat
Akali Dal ran the government in Punjab for two consecutive terms from 2007 to 2017. In its next election, Akali Dal had to face a bad defeat. Then the Congress led by Captain Amarinder Singh came to power winning 77 out of 117 seats. Akali Dal was hopeful that this time they will get power. However, this time the situation got worse. Aam Aadmi Party won 92 seats and despite alliance with BSP, Akali Dal was reduced to 3 seats.
