When we talk about 80’s makeup, our mind immediately goes to eye makeup. During that time period, the emphasis was on the eyes, with bold eyeliner, neon coloured eye shadows, and bright coloured eye makeup. The face was touched up but was not the focal point because, in that era, women had great skin. So, just a little blush on and a little touch-up, and yeah! you’re good to go.
The overlined lips of the 1990s: simple and effective. In the early 2000s, it was all about frosted shadow and juicy lip tubes with a light to medium coverage face base. We’ve come a long way with makeup products and techniques since the beginning. Makeup trends have had and will continue to have a significant impact on their respective eras.
In an interaction with ABP LiveSahibba K. Anand, a makeup expert, explained, “We are currently familiar with two types of makeup techniques: – Airbrush and Manual. They both assure you of a high-definition makeup look. However, because they are two different techniques, there will undoubtedly be some differences, some benefits, and some drawbacks, all depending on one’s a skin type and needs. So let’s take this forward and strengthen our knowledge about these techniques and their pros and cons to better decide what’s going to be your next final take on the makeup, for the approaching festivities or prospective celebrations in the house.”
Airbrush Makeup is literally a fine spray of makeup that is applied in a mist-form gently on the face; vs HD is high-definition makeup. Airbrush can only be used on the face (on the whole; not for eye makeup or the lips). While doing airbrush makeup, you can apply the foundation, work on the contour, highlight, and even blush.
The airbrush makeup technique has been used in the art for many years, and according to reports, it was first known to be used for makeup in the 1959 movie Ben Hur.
PROS:
- The finished look may feel lighter as it’s a spray of makeup as compared to HD makeup
- Has a smooth and flawless finish * You can build up the coverage as necessary, making it easier to layer
- Most airbrush makeup is silicon-based, so it’s long-lasting and doesn’t require much touch-up
- Better during the summer season than in winter, as in winters the skin feels even drier.
CONS:
- Color correction/concealing cannot be done using an airbrush
- Eye makeup cannot be done using this technique
- Cleaning of the spray required between the use of different colors
- If your skin is on the drier side, airbrush makeup may look flaky
- It is hard to re-blend airbrush makeup
- Airbrush makeup is more expensive
- It is harder to remove from the face
- When applying makeup using the airbrush, one has to skip applying primer as the airbrush makeup would attach to the primer instead of the skin.
- Not great during winter as the skin is drier.
Pro Tip: The artist Sahibba K. Anand suggested, For those with dry skin, airbrush makeup is not recommended as the products used are not as creamy. Hence, airbrush makeup is good for clients with oily skin.
Manual HD Makeup does not need to be explained because it is a tried and true technique that has been used since the makeup was first introduced. The makeup artists perform this pattern of makeup with their hands supported by makeup brushes and sponges.
This technique allows the artist to adjust the pressure of the application easily with their hands. Essentially, only manual makeup can be done for the eyes, as eye makeup requires precision, control, and a lot of safety measures.

- Can easily do color correction, concealing followed by the HD foundation
- Better chances of getting an exact match of foundation
- With HD makeup, the skin texture looks great on film/photography

CONS:
- If not blended well, may feel layered/heavy
- Depending on the brands it may or may not be long lasting

Serum… Moisturiser … Sunscreen … Primer … Makeup
