Another tech company ready to invest in AI but decides to quit making phones

Tech companies are gradually investing their resources in AI and this brand has decided the mobile business has enough to keep people happy.

Phone brands are starting to show their focus on AI but one company has decided that phones don’t make sense anymore and it is fully invested in AI for the future. Meizu is the company that has confirmed its plans to quit the smartphone business and ready to put all its eggs in the AI basket.

Meizu wants to focus on AI-powered OS tailored for mobile devices and even launch its first AI-enabled hardware product in 2024. Meizu has shown its hardware might with phones launching across the globe but the company isn’t enticed by the market anymore, with the upgrade cycle going up compared to previous years.

The company’s CEO claimed that users are taking more than 4 years to get a new phone, which seems to have convinced the brand about its changing focus towards AI in the years to come. Meizu is already available through in-car consoles and now its focus on AI shows more companies are betting on the future than continuing to invest in a saturated segment.

We have seen major tech brands shift their focus towards AI, which sadly has come at the cost of people laid off, and money being moved into products that have AI in some shape or form.

Chinese brands are equally invested in the technology with many chatbots showing their potential and more things in the pipeline from major names in the region. Meizu is just lapping up the trend and understandably cutting its losses in the mobile business and focusing on a more AI-centric strategy which we will see in flesh later this year.

So what happens to the existing users of Meizu? The company assures their support doesn’t go away and its stores in China will continue to operate for the time being. Having said that, Meizu is likely to shut shop in other markets from now on.
