Zampa found himself in the unfortunate situation of equalling an embarassing record in ODIs, as the spinner conceded 113 runs in his 10 overs against South Africa today in SuperSport Park

Who doesn’t aim to break records? They are the gold standard, a measure to let everyone know that one reigns supreme over all other. But, today, Australia’s Adam Zampa might agree to disagree as the spinner made history today, yet not the type he’d imagine or prefer.

Zampa found himself in the unfortunate situation of equalling an embarassing record in ODIs, as the spinner conceded 113 runs in his 10 overs against South Africa today in SuperSport Park. His feat mirrored Australian pacer Mick Lewis’ record of conceding the same amount of runs against the same opposition back in 2006. Funny how history repeats itself, but not so much for Zampa today.

Australia struggled immensely against a confident South African batting lineup, who hammered everything being thrown at them.

It all started with Heinrich Klaasen who created history of his won enroute to his 174 runs from a mere 83 deliveries, featuring an astounding total of 13 fours and 13 sixes.

Klaasen recorded the second-fastest century in his ODI career, which he reached after a mere 57 balls.

Then came in veteran David Miller, who teamed up with Klaasen to rain hell on the Aussies. The pair formed an unbroken partnership of 218 runs for the fifth wicket, as they propelled the Proteas to a record-breaking total of 416-5 by the end of it all.

This total of South Africa also broke the record for the most 400+ scores put up in a 50-over innings, as the Proteas’ tally went up to seven.

Zampa bore the brunt of it all the most. The stalwart spinner struggled to find any rhythm and could not even achieve a single scalp to ease the embarrassment.

Zampa’s figures were 0/50 after six overs and he conceded 63 in the last four overs. He gave away 26 runs in the 48th over to finish on 0/113. And byt the end, Zampa’s figures of 0/113 from his 10 overs became the joint-most costliest spell in ODI cricket, along with Mick Lewis.

Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan are jointly in third place as they conceded 110 runs. Both the bowlers registered this record against England.
