Abraham and Thakore Bring the Iconic Ikat Silk Houndstooth Saree Back on the Runway

Supermodel Carol Gracias graced the runway in the iconic ikat silk houndstooth sari which she adorned at Abraham & Thakore’s show back in 2011. So, what’s so iconic about it, you ask? Well, the sari has been exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and is now a part of the museum’s permanent archives.

According to David Abraham and Rakesh Thakore, the museum also has the picture of Carol Gracias wearing the same saree. Looking radiant in the sari she wore almost a decade ago, Carol was elated to be part of Abraham & Thakore’s showcase once again. Describing the collection Time Travel, she says, “It’s an art piece. It’s easy, it’s light and it’s just beautiful.” Each ensemble in the collection

The black and white printed sari with an accent of lime green was restyled to reminisce the past, celebrate the present and be kind and rewind in the future. Well, that’s what sustainability is all about, right? Or as David Abraham would like to put it: ‘If it is A&T you wear it forever’.

Classic styles that are timeless and trend agnostic have always been an important part of every collection. A garment’s longevity forms an underlying principle of the brand’s design philosophy. This season, in a twist, the designer duo mixed a few iconic designs from past Abraham & Thakore collections into the new collections to demonstrate this principle.

Exploring the language and vocabulary of fashion in India today, the collection Time Travel apart from recreating Abraham & Thakore’s signature styles also featured an array of new silhouettes in the form of wide leg palazzo pants, to a pair of churidars that were reimagined to work with a classic shirt. The collection also featured prints and textures created on khadi, cotton, silk and Tencel. The colour palette ranged from the multiple shades black and white with splashes of lime green, citrus and lemon.

While the clothes were the heroes of the show, it was Abraham and Thakore’s decision to keep the presentation simple that won hearts. The no gimmick, no décor and no runway showcase played the perfect canvas for their new collection.
