The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has expressed its opposition to the Central Government’s proposal of One Nation, One Election. The party has called it unconstitutional and a threat to Indian democracy. AAP leader Atishi strongly opposing the proposal has given her opinion in 12 pages to the Law Commission.

Let us inform that for the first time in 2017, the BJP had proposed One Nation, One Election in front of the country. This proposal was placed before the Law Commission and in 2018 the Law Commission supported this proposal. In December 2022, the Law Commission sent its report to all political parties seeking their opinion on it.

BJP’s Operation Lotus will benefit
Atishi said- The Law Commission had sought opinion from all political parties. Everyone used to think that what is the problem in implementing One Nation, One Election. But when we examine this proposal in depth, many worrying facts and theoretical issues come to the fore. If One Nation One Election happens in India, it will give a big blow to our democracy.

That’s why our party is opposing this proposal. He said that if One Nation One Election is implemented, then there is a danger of losing the right of people to give mandate and this will benefit BJP’s Operation Lotus.

Big parties will suppress small parties- Atishi
AAP leader Atishi said in a press conference on Monday that it would be difficult to speak on different issues during the simultaneous election and campaigning of the Center and the state. Also, those who vote for a different party in the center and a different party in the state, it will be difficult for them to vote for whom. Atishi said that with the implementation of One Nation One Election, the big parties, which have money and power, will suppress the regional party. Due to this, the people of the states will not be able to take the decision as to whom to vote for.

AAP asked- Why is this proposal being brought?
The AAP leader asked why the central government was bringing this resolution. Atishi said – No confidence will be accepted only till the new government is formed. Suppose no one gets the majority, then the way the speaker is elected. Anti-defection law will not apply to any MLA and MP and he can vote for anyone. it’s too dangerous.

Understand what is One Nation-One Election?
One nation-one election or one country-one election means that the Lok Sabha and Vidhansabha elections should be held simultaneously in the whole country. After independence, Lok Sabha and Vidhansabha elections were held simultaneously in 1952, 1957, 1962 and 1967, but in 1968 and 1969 many assemblies were dissolved prematurely. After that the Lok Sabha was also dissolved in 1970. Because of this, the tradition of one nation-one election was broken.

Is it really needed?
In December 2015, the Law Commission submitted a report on One Nation-One Election. In this, it was told that if elections to the Lok Sabha and Vidhansabha are held simultaneously in the country, then crores of rupees can be saved. Along with this, due to non-implementation of election code of conduct again and again, the development work will not be affected. Keeping these things in mind, it was recommended that simultaneous elections should be held in the country.
