Vadodara: In a bid to train youngsters for the shorter version of the game, the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) is for the first time organizing its own T20 tournament in the city.
Named T20 Challenge, the tournament being organized jointly with TCM Sports Management Private Ltd, started on Friday.
BCA officials said that the tournament has been planned to prepare the youngsters for the T20 format and in turn for the high-profile Indian Premier League (IPL).
“The main idea is to unearth new talent and evaluate how they can perform in a match situation. These matches will give them a chance to showcase their talent,” said BCA officials.
Nearly 100 young cricketers are participating in the tournament wherein a total of 33 matches will be played at the Alembic Ground over the next few days.
The six participating are Gladiators, Challengers, Titans, Warriors, Fighters and Stallions. Each team is playing two matches daily.
“We are following all the mandatory Covid protocols to ensure safety of the players and match officials. The matches are being streamed on fancode.com where cricket lovers can watch the action live,” BCA officials added.
Players who put up noteworthy performances will be given opportunities in matches outside the city and in other formats of the game.
BCA management said that the tournament will be an annual affair which will act as a feeder line to provide talented cricketers for the senior teams. The BCA has earned Rs 20 lakh from sponsorship and the money will be used for the development of cricket.
A similar talent search initiative ‘Streetlights To Floodlights’ in association with Aditya Birla Capital is already on for identifying and nurturing talented players from district areas.
