Suraj has secured 917th rank in UPSC even after missing both legs, one hand and having only 3 fingers in the other hand. That too in his first attempt. A son is born on November 14, 1994 in the house of Rajesh Kumar Tiwari, a resident of Mohalla Gharnajpur of Kurawali. The family names him as Rajat. The school is named after Suraj Tiwari. Rajesh Tiwari himself is a tailor by profession. He owns a small shop in Najpur. Mother Asha Tiwari is a housewife. Suraj’s younger sister Srishti Tiwari is currently studying BTC. Younger brother Raghav Tiwari is a student of BSC second year.

Rajesh Tiwari says, “My son Suraj was very fast in studies. Initially he used to study in English medium. Suraj studied at Parshuram Secondary School till 8th standard. After this passed high school and inter first division from SBRL Senior Secondary School in Mainpuri.

Telling this, his throat fills up and tears start flowing from his eyes. Then he takes care of himself and says, “Looking at our financial condition, Suraj decided to do a private job after doing his intermediate. He was then studying in BSC. But, he went to Delhi to get a job. Was doing a private job there.

Father said – year 2017 was the worst for my family
Rajesh Tiwari explains, “2017 has been an unforgettable year for our family. On January 29, 2017, Suraj left Delhi for Dadri by train. But, someone pushed him in the train itself and he became a victim of the accident. Suraj’s both legs and hands were amputated in this accident. He was treated for 4 months at Delhi’s AIIMS. After this he became disabled. This year my son Rahul Tiwari also passed away.

He says, the elder son’s death and Sooraj’s accident left us completely broken. But, Suraj did not give up even in this hour of grief. After 4 months of treatment Suraj started his further studies. Then for 6 years he studied only studies. During this, he did not let his disability come in the way. Nor did he ever cry for his physical deficiency.

Rajesh says emotionally, “My son suffered a lot, suffered a lot, but he did not give up. Sir, today the chest has become wide with pride. After this, today you are seeing, the name Suraj-Suraj, Rajat-Rajat is echoing in the whole town. He is definitely in Delhi now, but his stature has increased here.

Suraj’s mother Asha Devi’s tears are not stopping. With great difficulty she speaks her mind. She says, “I cannot say anything about what happened to my son. Everything is in the hands of God. Today that God has also given happiness. We were very sorry that our son has become handicapped. When I used to see his old photo, tears did not stop. My son also used to worship. It just happened.

She says, “After admission in JNU, Sooraj used to come home only during Teej festival. Yes, he definitely stayed at home for 6 months in the lockdown caused by Corona. During this also he continued to study. The last time he had come home when he had to get papers made for the interview.

Suraj’s mother and father said, during treatment at AIIMS, my son met Prakash Babu, a resident of Bihar. It was Prakash Babu who motivated Suraj. Told Suraj about JNU. Then Suraj gave the JNU exam. He failed in the first attempt, but passed in the second time. Then started studying there. However, when Dainik Bhaskar spoke to Prakash Babu, he said, “I had only guided Suraj. When Daily newspaper The team was at Suraj Tiwari’s house, when he made a video call to his family members. On the video call, Suraj spoke to his parents, sisters and brothers. Everyone got emotional while talking to him. Talking to us over the phone, Sooraj said that he has graduated from JNU. Stayed in Delhi and prepared for civil services. Here my professor fully cooperated. He also told that the circumstances were very opposite.

Suraj said, “I was very sorry that I did not have legs. I have done my graduation in Russian language from JNU. The number has also come for doing my PHD. I was also asked about the accident in the UPSC interview.” Suraj further said that he would return home in two to four days.

Kurawali SDM reached Suraj’s house, said – felt like I have succeeded
Kurawali’s SDM Yugantar Tripathi reached Suraj’s house late on Tuesday evening. He congratulated Suraj’s father by feeding him sweets. Yugantar Tripathi said, “I am a new PCS officer now. Before the interview Suraj had come to my office to get the documents done. I have been a competitive student, so Suraj and I had a lot of conversations.

I assured him that you will definitely succeed. Today Suraj has lived up to my belief. Today around one o’clock in the day Suraj got a call, he told that he was successful. I felt as if I had succeeded.
