The Union Ministry of Education has released the draft National Curriculum Framework (NCF). In this, it is proposed to take the 12th board examination in two terms. It has also been recommended to add marks of previous classes in the results of 10th-12th. In this framework, prepared keeping in mind the new National Education Policy, it is also proposed to end the division of Science, Commerce and Arts.

During Corona, the board examination was taken in two parts, now the same system will be made permanent. The new framework may come into effect from the session 2024-25.

So far the curriculum framework has been prepared in 1975, 1988, 2000 and 2005. This is also not the first attempt to change the format of board exams. Earlier in 2009, the continuous and comprehensive evaluation method was implemented for 10th, but it was withdrawn in 2017.

4 Years-2 Phase: From 9th to 12th, subjects have to be chosen from 8 groups

  • In the draft, flexibility will be kept in choosing subjects in the last 4 years (9th to 12th). These will be divided into 8 groups – Humanities, Mathematics-Computing, Vocational Education, Physical Education, Arts Education, Social Science, Science, Inter-disciplinary subject.
  • These 4 years will also be divided into two phases – 9th and 10th and 11th and 12th. In the first phase i.e. Science, Social Science and Humanities will be taught in class 9-10, in the second phase (class 11-12) History, Physics, Language will be taught.
  • There is no proposal to divide 9th-10th into two parts. In 9th-10th, students will have to study two subjects (16 subjects) of each group out of these 8 subjects during two years. There will be an annual examination for both the classes.
  • However, there will also be an option of semester system. Papers for 8 subjects out of 16 will have to be passed in the first year i.e. 9th and papers for the remaining 8 subjects will have to be passed in 10th. Marks of 9th will also be included in the 10th final certificate.
  • Similarly, in 11th and 12th also four subjects of 8 subject groups will have to be studied. In both these years, education will be done through semester system. The chosen subject has to be completed in one semester. To get the 12th certificate, the student has to pass in 16 papers (courses). You have to choose your four subjects from three subject groups out of 8.
  • For example, if a student chooses History from the Social Science subject group, he will have to complete four papers (courses) of History. If someone chooses Computer Science from Mathematics group, then he has to do four courses in it.

CBSE: There will be more MCQs in 10th-12th board exams

CBSE has decided to ask more number of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and reduce the weightage of short and long answer questions in the 2024 board exams, while changing the evaluation method. The board has taken this step in view of the new National Education Policy, so that students do not study by rote. In the 10th board examination of the year 2023-24, the weightage of MCQs in the paper will be 50%, while in 12th it will be 40%.
