A 50-bed children’s ward will be opened at Beleghata ID to reduce the pressure on BC Roy Hospital

Adeno virus is taking a terrible shape in the state. Many children in the state have already been affected by the virus. Children infected with this virus are admitted in hospitals of different districts of the state. Also many children are being referred to BC Roy Hospital. As a result, the pressure is increasing in BC Rai Hospital. In this situation, the health department has decided to open a 50-bed pediatric ward at Beleghata ID Hospital to reduce the pressure on BC Roy Hospital.

BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Pediatric Sciences Hospital is Bengal’s only referral hospital for children. Many children are being referred to BC Roy Hospital with respiratory problems due to increased adenovirus infections. Especially many children are being referred to this hospital from the district hospital. That is why the Health Department has taken this decision to reduce the pressure on BC Roy Hospital. A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam to discuss this matter. Other officials of the health department were present in the meeting. The meeting directed district hospitals to refer only if necessary. The health department said that it cannot be referred unnecessarily.

As a result of the referral, the hospital’s 25 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) beds have been occupied for over a month. Out of which 50 percent of the cases are children referred from the district. An official of BC Roy Hospital said that the pressure is increasing on this hospital. More and more children are being referred to this hospital from district hospitals. Incidentally, the medical services for children in this hospital have been improved a lot during the Corona epidemic. Hence the pressure of referring children to these hospitals is increasing. According to hospital sources, more children are being referred to Kolkata from Howrah, Hooghly and Nadia. Most of them are children with adenovirus. Over the past few weeks, city hospitals have been referred from districts. Health officials said precious time could have been saved if these children were treated there instead of being sent to Kolkata.
