ABC ID Must For University Admission In 2023, Says UGC, Students Face Aadhaar Hurdle

Students will have to open a mandatory Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) account at abc.gov.in in order to get admission in universities across the country, from 2023 onwards. Following the latest development, the online generation of ABC accounts is underway. However, students have been reportedly facing difficulty with the Aadhaar verification process while generating their ABC accounts.

Assessing the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in a meeting on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, the University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar called upon the vice chancellors of universities to ensure 100 percent registration on the ABC portal for the upcoming 2023-24 academic year.

The ABC platform is a virtual database of the academic credits earned by students stored online. As underlined in the NEP 2022, the ABC platform would help ensure credit transfer of students, allowing them to switch across different streams and institutions for higher academics with ease.

Several VCs have reported progress in the registrations of students on the ABC platform. However, many universities have highlighted problems in the ABC registrations owing to aadhar-related issues. Representatives of Central University of Kashmir, Central University of Karnataka, Guru Ghasidas University, Assam University, Central University of Gujarat, University of Allahabad among others raised the issue which has been causing slower progress in the creation of ABC IDs. Some university heads have also said that the underlying problem is also because most students don’t have their mobile numbers linked with their aadhaar.

The Vice Chancellor of Central University of Tamil Nadu has said that about 70 percent of students from the varsity have registered on the ABC platform. However, the remaining 30 percent of students have been facing difficulty in registration due to OTP-linked issues.

The ABC platform will play a major role in the implementation of the NEP 2020 provisions like dual degree, joint degree, and twinning programmes. The UGC has further asked universities to offer up to 40 per cent of the courses in any programme online on SWAYAM, the central government’s Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platform. The credits earned through these courses will also be stored on the ABC platform.

While interacting with the VCs, the UGC Chairman also sought a brief report on the lag issues pertaining to student registrations on the ABC portal. “We are here to listen to any technical problems that universities are facing regarding ABC implementation. It is our aim to onboard all students in central universities in the ABC platform in the upcoming academic year. The students will have to have a unique ABC unique ID to get admission from this year onward,” M Jagadesh Kumar said.
