On Sunday, Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor condoled the death of former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf by tweeting. His post was targeted by the BJP. Tharoor questioned the BJP on Monday that if Musharraf was anathema to all patriots, why did the BJP government negotiate a ceasefire with him in 2003, and why the 2004 Vajpayee-Musharraf joint statement was signed. Wasn’t Musharraf then seen as a reliable peace partner?

Actually, Tharoor had posted on the death of Musharraf in which he had written – Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf passed away due to rare disease. Musharraf, once a staunch enemy of India, became a real force for peace between 2002-2007. In those days I used to meet him annually at the United Nations.

Even before this, Tharoor had said in a tweet – I grew up in an India where it is expected that they say good things about the person who dies. Musharraf was a staunch enemy and was responsible for Kargil, but he worked for peace in India in 2002-7. He was not our friend, but he saw strategic advantage in peace. I found him smart, attractive. His strategic thinking was very clear.

Union Minister said – Post is showing the thinking of Congress
Tharoor’s post drew sharp criticism from the BJP. Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar hit out at Tharoor, saying his post reflected the thinking of the Congress very well. A former Congress Minister of State for External Affairs would have thought that a Pak general who spread terror, backstabbed and tortured our soldiers in violation of every international norm, has become a real force of peace.

BJP spokesperson said – Congress’s favoritism to Pakistan has come to the fore again
BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla said Musharraf was the mastermind of the Kargil war, a dictator, accused of heinous crimes. He considered Taliban and Osama as brothers and heroes and refused to take back the bodies of his own soldiers, he is being praised by the Congress! Are you surprised?
