Adi Ganga: In two and a half years, Adi Ganga will get a new life, a major project to protect the river

This time, in the meeting of the Central Ganga Commission, the topic of reforming the original Ganga came up. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke positively about the restoration of this pristine Ganga. This time the Kolkata Municipality has expressed great hope for the restoration of this original Ganga. According to municipal sources, this Adiganga will be renovated at a cost of 653 crores. Major projects like cleaning the river water, improving navigability, better control of tides are being taken up in Adi Ganga with the help of central government.

It is reported that this huge amount has been allocated under the National Mission for Clean Ganga project under the Namami Ganga project. The target has been taken to complete this work within two and a half years.

Undoubtedly a big project. The pattern of the original Ganga may change. Meanwhile, during the tide, the water of the original Ganges enters the low-lying area of Kalighat. Some work has been done at various times to solve the problem. It is reported that a great work will be done under this project. Engineering work will be done over an area of 23.6 km. Three plants will also be built. Seven pumping stations, 5 mini pumping stations will be constructed. It is also reported that 11 pumping stations will be renovated.

Kolkata Municipality through IIT Roorkee, Bengal State Management Group prepared the DPR. Its project cost has been estimated at Tk 934.7 crore. Earlier, environmentalist Subhash Dutt had filed a case. As a result of this, the National Green Tribunal issued an order. Based on that, initiatives are being taken to restore Adi Ganga under the Namami Gange project.

Meanwhile, according to many, in the 15th-17th centuries, this original Ganga was the main flow of the Ganges. But later that stream dried up. At present it is weak. In the 18th century, the British colonial government undertook the renovation of Toli Nala, an old branch of the Adi Ganga. This initiative is for ease of navigation of sea going ships. Basically this measure was taken so that the merchant ships could travel easily at that time.

Meanwhile, the Adi Ganga gradually began to flow. Many ghats are lost. By the 1960s, the Adiganga practically took the form of a large sewer. This is a big initiative to save that Adiganga.
