India’s health ministry has objected to the Lancet report. A ministry official dismissed the report as misleading. In which more than 47% of antibiotics were said to be used without the permission of the Drugs Controller of India (CDSCO).

Consumption more than India in many countries
Senior Pharmacologist who prepared the list of essential medicines and Vice Chairman of National Committee on Medicines Prof. YK Gupta said that it is not right to use the word rejected in the Lancet report. India may be the largest consumer of antibiotics, but the rate of per capita consumption of antibiotics is lower than that of many countries.

People consuming maximum azithromycin tablet
In the year 2019, Azithromycin 500 mg was the most consumed antibiotic in India. It is included in the Essential Medicine List i.e. the list of essential medicines. It was followed by Cefixime 200 mg tablet as the second best selling formulation. In India, only 10% of the formulations were on the essential medicines list. In the year 2019, the DID i.e. defined daily dose per 1000 inhabitants was 10.4. Whereas in 2015 this rate was recorded at 13.6 DID.

He said that Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya was upset after the Lancet report came out. He called me at 6 in the morning for information on the issue. I told them that there has been some misunderstanding, the situation in the country has improved as compared to the previous years.
