For the first time, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) collected 3,060 samples from 249 districts across all the states of the country to test the jaggery. The results are shocking. Chemicals are mixed in the jaggery being sold in many states. There are many cities where all the samples have proved to be unsuccessful. Overall, 36% of jaggery in the country’s markets failed to meet the standards.

Jaggery sold loose is worse than packed
FSSAI also found in the investigation that jaggery sold loose is worse than packaged jaggery. Therefore, FSSAI has advised to eat packed jaggery. During the investigation, a good thing has also come to the fore that all the 7 solid metals (heavy metals) that were tested in jaggery were not found in jaggery. However, this report has not been made public yet.

Advice to educate employees
Based on the investigation, FSSAI has written letters to the FACI Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the authorities regulating micro-small scale industries. It has been told that people engaged in the business of jaggery should be made aware. They should be given proper training.

Apart from this, the Indian Council for Agricultural Research and the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research Institute (IISRI) and the National Sugar Institute and State Research Institute have also been asked to spread awareness about pure jaggery.
