Sex determination racket busted in Gujarat | Rajkot News – Times of India

RAJKOT: Another illegal sex determination racket was busted in Rajkot city with the police arresting two persons, including a woman, after laying a trap.
The detection of crime branch (DCB), Rajkot, got specific information that a woman named Beena alias Meera Deda was actively engaged in illicit sex determination tests.
The DCB then laid a trap at a house in Ranchhodnagar area late on Saturday night and prepared female constable Neeta Chavda as a decoy. Chavda called up Beena saying that she wanted to check the sex of the fetus. Beena agreed to do the sex determination test for Rs 15,000.
“When Chavda asked her where she should come for the test, Beena said she would facilitate the procedure at a time and place convenient to the woman,” Manoharsinh Jadeja, deputy commissioner of police, DCB, said at a press conference on Sunday.
According to the plan, Neeta called up Beena and called her to a house n Ranchhodnagar area saying only she and her sister-in-law were at home. Beena along with the main accused Nayan Girnara reached there at night.
“When they entered the house and started preparing for the procedure, the decoys revealed their identities.
Girnara immediately tried to break the wireless sonography machine, but cops waiting outside the house overpowered him,” said Jadeja.
The duo had carried out 21 sex determinations of pregnant women in Rajkot city alone. “We are yet to ascertain how many more they did in other districts,” said DCB sources.
Girnara, a resident of Delwada village of 42, works in a health centre in a village near Una town of Gir-Somnath district and impersonates as a doctor. Beena knew him since her native is also near Una. Police also recovered a sedan car and Rs 4.27 lakh from Girnara.
“Beena was responsible for getting the customers. The duo had been running this racket for the past one year. Jadeja said they charged Rs 15,000 only for sex determination but charges for facilitating abortions were separate.
Both have been booked under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
Earlier in January, the police had busted a major sex determination racket on University Road and arrested Dr Mukesh Toriya and his staff.
