Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh were hanged on this day in 1989 for the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi’s two bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, shot and killed her on 31 October 1984. Both of them were reportedly upset with Indira’s ‘Operation Blue Star’.

A third person was also involved in this murder, whose name was Kehar Singh. Kehar, however, was not involved in the shooting of Indira, but was found guilty of plotting the murder. Beant Singh was gunned down by his security personnel after he opened fire on Indira.

Indira Gandhi came out of the Prime Minister’s Office on 31 October 1984 at around 9 am. Indira Gandhi was discussing with the officials. Then suddenly Beant Singh, the security guard posted under his protection, fired three bullets at Indira Gandhi with his service revolver.

Beant Singh shouted to Satwant Singh standing a short distance away from him and said- ‘What are you seeing? Shoot. Satwant immediately fired all the 25 bullets of his automatic carbine at Indira Gandhi. After being shot, Indira was immediately taken to AIIMS Hospital, about 4 hours later she was declared dead at 2 pm.

Beant Singh and Satwant Singh were caught by other security personnel after they opened fire on Indira. During this, Beant Singh was killed while trying to escape. Satwant Singh was arrested.

Indira Gandhi’s assassins wanted to avenge her alleged operation Blue Star. Hundreds of people were killed in the ‘Operation Blue Star’ conducted by Indira with the help of the army against Khalistani terrorists in the Golden Temple, the holy site of Sikhs.

Kehar Singh, Satwant Singh sentenced to death

Along with Satwant, Kehar Singh and Balwant Singh, who conspired to assassinate Indira, were also tried. However, Balwant Singh was later released due to lack of evidence, but the court awarded death sentence to Indira, who opened fire on Indira, and Kehar Singh, the conspirator, guilty of her murder.

About 5 years after Indira’s death, Satwant Singh (54 years) and Kehar Singh (26 years) were hanged in Tihar Jail on 6 January 1989. After the hanging, the bodies of both were not even given to their relatives and the jail administration performed their last rites.
