ICMR, NIV to study whether vaccines in India can neutralize delta plus version of coronavirus India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: After detecting the ‘Delta Plus’ variant in COVID patients in some parts of the country, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) have decided to conduct a study to see if a new and more potent version of the coronavirus can be neutralized by an existing one. Vaccines in India.
According to the government, the cases of Delta Plus . have been found in Maharashtra (Ratnagiri and Jalgaon) Kerala (Palakkad and Pathanamthitta) and in Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal and Shivpuri).
The study is likely to include Covaxin and Covishield vaccines. “The newly emerged Delta Plus version has the potential to increase
Transmissibility, high binding capacity to lung cells and resistance to monoclonal antibody treatment. Given this scenario, the Delta Plus variant could be a concern, and a higher surveillance and containment of the affected area should be lowered,” said Dr Pragya Yadav, head of NIV’s maximum containment facility.
When asked whether existing vaccines can fight against the Delta Plus variant, he said samples have been collected and a study is being done.
“According to earlier data relating to Delta variants, neutralization was taking place with existing vaccines in India. Although neutralization has fallen, it is enough to protect against Delta variants. Delta Plus should also behave (similarly) . We are working in this direction . . We have disassembled this version and we are going to do a study soon
Will come back with the study,” she said.
All Delta sub-segments are treated as Forms of Concern (VOC) and the assets of AY.1 are still under investigation. There is also Delta Plus
Known as ‘AY.1’ version or B.1.617.2.1. The variation frequency of AY.1 is less in India. The cases of AY.1 have mostly been reported from nine countries in Europe, Asia and America.
