The Supreme Court seeks a response from the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) regarding a petition demanding the release of NEET PG answer keys. Nineteen aspirants have approached the apex court, seeking transparency on the normalisation process used in calculating the NEET PG 2024 results and requesting the disclosure of raw scores for all candidates.
During the hearing, Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud noted the aspirants’ request for the question paper and answer key. Senior advocate Arvind Makhija, representing the petitioners, emphasised the importance of transparency, arguing that answer keys should be made available for all exams. He referenced the Bandhopadhyay case, where the court had earlier ruled in favor of such disclosures, as reported by Live Law.
Makhija also pointed out that the final scorecards did not tally with expectations, raising further doubts among the candidates. He urged the court to intervene quickly, as NEET PG counselling was scheduled to begin on Friday.
The CJI, acknowledging the urgency of the matter but pointing out the last-minute nature of the petition, issued a notice to the NBEMS and directed the standing counsel to be served. The court agreed to hear the case on Friday, September 20.
The NEET PG 2024 results, announced by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) on August 23, triggered concerns among students due to unexpectedly low rankings. After comparing their scores with unofficial answer keys, many candidates raised suspicions about discrepancies in the ranking process. In response, on September 4, aspirants formally requested that NBEMS release the official answer key and set up a grievance portal to address their concerns.
Notably to participate in the counselling process, candidates must achieve at least a 50 percentile to qualify for counselling, while SC, ST, and OBC category candidates require a minimum of 40 percentile.
