In West Bengal, 7 children have died in 24 hours due to respiratory tract infection. A senior health official said that five of these children died in government hospitals in Kolkata, while two died in Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital.

The government says that all the children died due to Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI). It is common to have this infection in this season. The state government says that 5,213 cases of ARI have been registered in the state in the last one month so it should not be considered as a contagious disease. The administration also said that they are prepared to deal with the situation and 5000 beds and 600 paediatricians have been deployed in 121 hospitals.

A few days back, the government issued a statement saying that so far 12 deaths have occurred due to adenovirus in the state. Out of this, 8 also had other serious diseases. Despite this, the government claims that the deaths that occurred in the last 24 hours were not due to adenovirus, but due to ARI.

Mamta government issued emergency number

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called an emergency meeting on Wednesday regarding the situation, following which the government issued guidelines and a 24×7 emergency helpline number.
