As many as 3,015 people have been arrested since the Assam Police started its crackdown on child marriage on February 3. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave this information on social media on Monday.

He said the crackdown against child marriage has entered its second week with 3,015 arrests so far. This campaign against social evil will continue. Its advantage is that people are surrendering before the police.

In fact, the Assam Police started a crackdown on child marriages from February 3, in which more than 2,000 people, including Hindu and Muslim priests who conducted these marriages, were arrested within the first two days.

POCSO will be imposed on marriage below 14 years
The Assam cabinet has decided to book men marrying girls below the age of 14 under the POCSO Act. Also, those marrying girls in the age group of 14 to 18 years will be prosecuted under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006. Sarma says the decision has been taken to curb the high rate of maternal and infant mortality in the state, as child marriage is also one of the main reasons for it.
