3 Crore Houses Under PM Awas Yojana, A Symbol Of Women Empowerment: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the government of India has so far completed the construction of 3 crore ‘pucca’ houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) for the poor. He also said that the houses have become a “symbol of women empowerment”.

“We have made an important step in our resolve to provide pucca house to every poor of the country. The construction of more than three crore houses has been possible only with the participation of the people. These houses with basic facilities have also become a symbol of women’s empowerment today,” tweeted PM Modi in Hindi.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is a flagship program of the Government of India being implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), which was launched on 25th June 2015. It has two components – Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) & Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Rural (PMAY-R).

2.52 crore houses have been constructed under PMAY-R and 58 lakh houses have been constructed under PMAY-U, with an expenditure of 1.95 lakh crore and 1.18 lakh crore respectively. Every house comes with basic facilities including the gas connection under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), water connection, and electricity.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget 2022 speech, announced to complete 80 lakh houses for eligible beneficiaries under the Prime Minister Awas Yojana in both rural and urban areas in the year 2022-23.
